When mixed with Liquitex Ultra Matte Medium, colors have higher opacity compared to other mediums, except Modeling Paste. The extendibility of color varies among different pigments. Adding over 50% of Liquitex Ultra Matte Medium can function as a weak tinting white, raising the original color's value by one level. Light colors are affected less than dark colors, and colors mixed with this medium dry to a matte finish.

Applications of Liquitex Ultra Matte Medium include mixing it with opaque paint for a matte sheen and a gouache appearance. These "gouache" colors are water-resistant, flexible, lightfast, and permanent when dry, unlike traditional gouache colors, which are not permanent and can be accidentally re-wetted. If you run low on a color while halfway through painting an area, simply add an equal amount of medium to the color to finish painting without remixing.
